Learning Roller Skating Beginner Tips  for Women

Have you ever considered purchasing quad skates, but you don’t know where to start? Here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned over the last three years to help get you rolling around. It is important to know these tips and tricks are what has helped me. The process may look different for you, but the goal of this post is to help give you real life tips, so you feel secure within yourself, and not feel lost when you get into your new hobby.

6 Roller Skating Beginner Tips

1. I recommend you start practicing your balance, having good balance helps you from falling as often and it also helps you with moving around. There are different exercises you can do to practice balance, a few of them would be to shift your weight from side to side, and practicing standing on one foot. You can also add materials like a balance board; or another great way to practice balance would be through yoga. Practicing these types of skate balance exercises helps you understand your awareness of the position your feet are in, and the movement of your body.

2. The next thing to practice would be how you stand outside, there are two positions you can practice. A T-stop position is a common way to stand. It helps your wheels go against gravity so you are not rolling around. Another form to keep still would be to make a V shape with your feet, this also helps keep you grounded so you’re not rolling around.

3.  Practice how you will stop. The easiest way to stop is the toe stop drag, if you put your dominant foot forward and drag your toe stop, and place your other foot behind you will begin to slow down. The T-stop is an advanced move that takes some balance. T-stop is similar to the toe stop and drag, the difference would be you will be dragging your skate on the ground with all four wheels touching the ground. Worst case scenario you look for a non-concrete area to fall in, like grass or dirt. If there is nothing like that near you, fall on your butt! There is usually way more cushion there than your face.

4. Safety gear, when you are first starting it is the smart idea to wear knee pads, wrist guards, and elbow pads, you can also wear a helmet if you feel it is necessary, but ALWAYS wear a helmet if you are park skating or trying to do the extreme. Please always remember safety is sexy!

5. Watch your surroundings, at any time the terrain can change and you will need to expect the unexpected, don’t forget to also watch out for little rocks and sticks. They are equivalent to the banana peels in Mario, they WILL throw you off your game.

6. Having a strong core is also crucial, because when core muscles are weak it is more likely that it can lead to more fatigue, less endurance, and injuries. Strengthening core muscles can help with movement and balance as well.

What protective gear should I purchase?

When you begin to roller skate you will fall. There is no avoiding that, but you can invest in quad skate gear so when you fall it doesn’t hurt as bad. There are knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, butt pads, and helmets depending on how safe you want to be, and how cushioned you want to be. Which will determine what gear you should buy. Most skate gear comes together in a pack. If you are just starting I would recommend looking on amazon for different price ranges for gear. Looking for some tools? Check out Roller Shawty’s blog post on Outdoor Roller Skates for women maintenance tips. A list of different tool options are included for just under $15.

When it comes to purchasing roller skates, I suggest purchasing reasonable price skates especially if you are starting. Skate prices can range from $50-$600, depending on the boot, wheels, and skate plate that is used. I would recommend looking at Impala, Chicago Women roller skates, Riedell, and Amazon.  When I first started to skate I bought my first skates from Big 5 Sporting Goods. They were Riedell low cut for $50. Buying low-cost roller skates can save you from overspending when you first start, as you start to improve over time you may want to invest in better roller skates to fit your needs.

Extra roller skating Tips for beginners to consider

As time goes on you will find little tips and tricks that will fit your needs. Carry a first aid kit, with some Neosporin or alcohol wipes to disinfect your wounds and some band-aids. If you’re going to be skating outdoors it’s a good idea to be prepared with a small backpack. You will be able to carry your first aid kit, snacks, water, and other miscellaneous items. Get some headphones or bring a speaker and start doing random moves or bring a friend with you so you can give each other tips or help each other learn new moves. Another option is to record yourself so you can see your process or what you will need to work on.

Now you have a few basic tips to help you get started on your journey. The most important tip of them all is just to have FUN! Skating is a great way to express yourself whether you are wanting to learn how to skate and dance or go to the extreme and learn how to do a front flip. People always say practice makes perfect, to which I say practice builds patience. Things take time so don’t be hard on yourself when you don’t land your trick. Hopefully you learn a few new tips and tricks, now stop reading this and go out and roller skate!
